It handles misdemeanors and certain felonies, so “criminal” or “felony” alone is not enough to choose the custodian. Follow the court shown on the case. Both courts list ordinary weekday hours of 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., excluding legal holidays.

Describe the document and calculate the copy charge

Make a written request or visit the filing clerk. Maryland’s Case Search FAQ says telephone requests for additional case information are not accepted; use telephone calls to confirm location, availability or submission details. In the written request, give the case number, defendant’s name, document title or filing date, number of copies, your contact and delivery address, and whether certification is necessary.

The Circuit Court fee schedule lists ordinary copies at $0.50 per page and certification at $5 for each certification plus $0.50 per copied page. One certified four-page document has a listed copying-and-certification charge of $7. Separately, the District Court’s March 2026 schedule lists photocopies and computer printouts at $0.50 per page and DC-033 certification at $5 per request plus copying. Ask the appropriate clerk to confirm page count, any additional delivery service and payment method.

A recipient may need a certified disposition, while your own review may need only inspection or an ordinary copy. Settle that requirement before paying for several certified documents. If the requested filing is not immediately available, ask whether the office can supply an accessible electronic version or arrange inspection, and whether either option changes the quoted charge or delivery plan.

Treat missing online information as a reason to check the clerk

Charles Circuit criminal coverage in Case Search begins October 26, 1998; the statewide FAQ lists District Court criminal coverage from late 1991. Older files require a clerk inquiry. A search that reaches the 600-result limit may omit the case you need, so narrow the name, court or filing period rather than assuming the displayed list is exhaustive.

Maryland also withholds some outcomes from Case Search even when the courthouse record remains publicly accessible, including dismissals, acquittals and nolle prosequi dispositions. Stet charges after three years and certain cannabis cases are other examples. Separately, expunged, sealed and shielded records are not open to the general public. Ask about the specific record and your lawful access, without interpreting an empty result as a clean criminal history.

Keep a delayed request with the office holding the case

The Charles judicial-records guidance warns that archived storage, active use, technical problems and multiple or bulk requests can prevent immediate access. Preserve the request, submission date and any reference. Ask the same clerk what retrieval step remains, when to check again, and whether your deadline can be accommodated. Resending a District Court request to Circuit Court does not move the file or resolve a delay.

Correct an entry or obtain the right background-check product

For inaccurate Case Search information, send written notice to the court where the original record was created or filed, identifying the disputed entry and supporting documents. A correction request is different from a request to seal or expunge a valid record. The Judiciary explicitly says Case Search should not be used as a criminal background check and directs that task to Maryland DPSCS Criminal Justice Information System, which maintains fingerprint-supported history records.
